As a white person, I was surprised, and ashamed, to find out recently the degree to which white people have stolen and appropriated Black cooking and called it "Southern". I found this out through watching a show on Netflix called High on the Hog, which is hosted by, and mostly about, Black chefs and how they are reclaiming their recipes and culture. Yet another thing for white people to be ashamed of...and I'm not saying this in some "white guilt" way, it's just the truth. You are right. White people have stolen this from Black people.

I hope someday I can have the honor of tasting what gumbo should really be.
